8/8/20 Hall of Fame Broodmares - Let's look at Kathryn Haines BHF

There are a lot of mares in the American Saddlebred Broodmare Hall of Fame, and it's no surprise that I favor the old girls.  The ones who did it without reproductive help, surrogate mares, embryo transplants, shipped semen, and let's face it, about 250 classes at the Kentucky State Fair each year to give multiple opportunities of producing a World's Champion.  Nothing against technology and all that it has done to broaden our Saddlebred world, but the old gals did it without  all this assistance.

Today we're going all the way back to 1913 to look at Kathryn Haines, who made a huge impact on American Saddlebreds through her offspring.  Bred at the wonderful Saddlebred nursery, Kalarama Farm, she was sired by Rex Monroe and out of the exquisitely beautiful Denmark-bred mare Japanette.  That made Kathryn Haines totally Denmark, before the Denmark/Chief families were completely co-mingled.  Kathryn was a World's Champion as a yearling, and became a good five gaited show mare. Later purchased by John Crozer, a man noted for his excellent Saddlebreds, she was bred to multiple stallions with great results.  So here is Kathryn, and her production record.

1919   Kate Haines   BHF, sired by Sun Flower                                                                                                         When bred to King's Genius, she produced Leatherwood King, Leatherwood Genius,               Bourbon Genius, Genius of Stonyridge and The Genius.  More on that later.

1921  Kate Peavine  BHF, sired by Rex Peavine                                                                                                          She produced RWGC Sweet Lavender and noted sire American Dictator

1922  Timity, gelding sired by Peacock McDonald

1924  WGC Tee Caddy, gelding sired by Ben Sory

1925  Kingston's Choice, sired by Ben Sory                                                                                                              He sired a number of good horses

1926  WC Abie's Irish Rose BHF, sired by American Born                                                                                            She produced 2 BHF mares and 2 CHampion show horses.  More on that later.

1927  WC Native Born, gelding, sired by American Born

1929  American Ace, sired by American Born                                                                                                         A grand sire, he had an enormous impact on the breed, more on that later.

  1. I never saw that Indiana Ace picture--Can't tell if it's a retouched photo or a drawing...I had a horse once by a son of Indiana Ace.
