President's Day 2/18/19

One of our National Holidays each year falls in February to honor the Presidents of our United States.  No mail service, banks and schools are closed, lots of sales with a Presidential theme, so it's a big deal.  In light of that, surely there are some saddlebreds named after our past presidents, right?  As I discovered, that's not the case.  As a matter of fact, half of the presidents don't have a horse named in their honor, and most of the horses that were named for a president didn't have much of an impact.  If fact, there is a clean winner in the Best-Equine-President contest.

So here is the list of all of our 45 presidents to date.  Those that have a horse named after them are listed with year of birth, and sire line.  Some really surprised me.  No Ulysses S. Grant???  No JFK?  LBJ's horse didn't include his last name, and the only Clinton horse was named for Hillary, not Bill.  Eisenhower's horse was named for him while he was a General, not when he was President.

And the top Presidential horse was none other than CH Ronald Reagan, a World's Grand Champion Fine Harness horse, and twice Reserve World's Grand Champion.  His namesake was a lover of horses, and often rode at his ranch in California.  Here is the pedigree of the equine Ronald Reagan.
