10/7/18 1963's Sire rating

This series started at  1973 and ends at the 1963 stallion issue of Saddle & Bridle.  February's issue always contained the sire rating, and this post will feature the pictures of the stallions advertised in the magazine.  I always use the year of the magazine, in this case 1963, to report the results, but in fact, the rating is from the prior year.  The top stallion from 1973, Stonewall Premier, was third on the list in 1963, so here was a stallion at or near the top for many years.  However, I don't think there are any stallions standing in 2018 that have him on their top line.  The top stallion from 1953, Anacacho Denmark, was long deceased by 1963,  but was represented by 3 of his sons who were full brothers on the 1963 list.  They were Ridgefield's Denmark, Clarma, and Golden Thunderbolt.  Their most famous full brother, Oman's Desdemona Denmark, hit his peak in the 1970's when he lead the rating for 3 years.  Another Anacacho Denmark son on the list in 1963 was Anacacho Empire.

The top stallion in 1963 was the wonderful Starheart Stonewall, who didn't even make the list in 1953, but lead the list three times total in his career at stud.  Starheart Stonewall was one of five sons of Stonewall King on the list in 1963.  The others were Stonewall Premier, Stonewall Supreme, Stonewall's Jack Pot and Stonewall's Golden Dream.  Years later in the 1980's, Starheart Stonewall's son Stonewall's Main Event twice topped the list.

The stallion in second place in 1963 was none other than Wing Commander.  On the last list the blog covered from 1953, he had yet to sire his first colt, but in the stud as in the show ring, he was a superstar.  The following year's magazine had Wing Commander at the top of the sire rating, where he remained until his death.  In the decades to follow, Wing's sons, grandsons and great-grandsons were peppered all over the sire listing.  In 2018, his descendant, Undulata's Nutcracker dominates.

The top deceased sires from 1963 were of course the top sires from a decade earlier, Anacacho Shamrock, Anacacho Denmark, King Coe, Society Rex, Kalarama Colonel, Captain Courageous and Sparkling Waters still had good offspring hitting the show rings.

Here are the stallions which had large ads in the magazine in alphabetical order.  Their placement on the top 25 list is noted in red
