8/1/18 Genius Bourbon King and his remarkable sons

This final installment on the handsome breeding stallion Genius Bourbon King lists his breeding sons and a few of their more important offspring. After early success at stud, one might think that mare owners would have flocked to this stallion, but a unique set of circumstances led to a very low total of offspring for a stallion of this caliber.  His breeder didn't really need more stallions and his second owner dabbled in other species more so than saddlebreds.  JL Younghusband, his third owner, launched his show career and set a relatively high stud fee, so Genius Bourbon King's number remained low despite the obvious quality of his get.  His final owner, Mrs. Large, gave the stallion more opportunity at stud, but he only had five seasons at stud under her ownership when he died at age 24.  In 22 breeding seasons, he produced 212 total offspring, so he averaged less than 10 colts per year.

Several of his sons have made a lasting impact on the Saddlebred breed.  Genius Better Bourbon, Shoreacres Anacacho Genius and The Rambler produced good quality show horses that have continued for generations.  Genius Bourbon King had one son that had a profound effect, and that was Valley View Supreme.  If Valley View Supreme only sired Supreme Sultan he would have been important, but he sired an entire village of good sons and daughters.
