2/18/17 Gallant Guy and Land O'Goshen

CH Gallant Guy O'Goshen, foaled in 1951, was winner of the 5-gaited stallion stake six straight years, from 1955 through 1960, making him a multi World's Champion in the stiffest of competition.  He was also Reserve World's Grand Champion in 1956.  He was purchased as a yearling by H.G. Whittenberg, owner of Hayfield Farm in Louisville Kentucky, and was owned by them for the remainder of his life.  He was trained by Fritz Jordan who also managed his career at stud which spanned some fifteen seasons.  This post will look at those horses sired by Gallant Guy, and then will take a look at his roots from the Land O'Goshen.

Gallant Guy sired a number of good breeding sons, but many of his prominent descendants come through his daughters.  He produced around 175 colts and of his 12 CHampion offspring, 6 were geldings and 6 were mares.  His showring stars included CH Crimson Bow, CH Hayfield's American Beauty W, CH Hayfield's Belle,   CH Winter Wine, CH the Spirit of '76, CH Lad O'Shea and CH Guy's Gal.   His son Boola Boola was also a World's Champion since he won the 1979 5-Gaited Stallion Stake.  Boola Boola also had a career at stud, being bred and owned his entire life by Copper Coin Farm in Simpsonville, Ky.  Other breeding sons of Gallant Guy were Astro Guy, Hayfield's Last Guy, Valiant Prince Guy, Badge of Gallantry and Hayfield's Bold Knight.

Gallant Guy sired the mare Graves' Gypsy Queen.  Bred by Jim Aikman, she was out of the Linda's Plain Jane, second dam Just Plain Jane BHF who in turn was the dam of Cameo's Farewell, a very prominent stallion in South Africa.  Graves' Gypsy Queen was dam to full brothers 3-T's Worthy One and Worthy Guy.  3-T's Worthy One was the broodmare sire of 3 time WGC CH Courageous Lord.  Another daughter by Gallant Guy, Hayfield's Amazonia Princess produced three CHampions, Comedienne, Rage of the Stage and Lion in Winter.

CH Gallant Guy O'Goshen was bred by William Belknap, owner of Land O'Goshen farm in Goshen Kentucky.  Mr. Belknap purchased the farm in 1916 and also bought his foundation mare, Land O'Goshen Adele who was by Undulata Dare by Chester Dare.  Over the next 50 years, Belknap bred many horses that had O'Goshen attached to their names, including CH Gallant Guy O'Goshen.  William Belknap was a prominent breeder of Saddle Horses, and the ASHA president from 1958 to 1965.  He felt Saddlebreds were useful horses and could be used in a variety of ways.  One of his trainers, Louis Taylor, wrote the book, The Horse American Made, which showcases the versatility of the American Saddlebred. .

Some well known horses bred by Mr. Belknap are Kaladare O'Goshen, a daughter of Land O'Goshen Adele.  When Kaladare O'Goshen was bred to a son of King Barrymore, she produced Kalabara O'Goshen BHF.  When Kalabara O'Goshen was bred to American Ace, she produced not only Gilded Gal O'Goshen, dam of Gallant Guy, she also produced the well known stallion Ace O'Goshen.  Ace O'Goshen sired Katie Boone, dam of Stonewall's Main Event, Ridgefields' Flora BHF, Princess Margaret O'Goshen and the breeding stallion Faustiana's Top Brass.

  1. What a surprise to see Catherine Rex Peavine in one of the pictures. She was my first equation horse back in the 50's. If memory serves me,at my age that is suspect, I rode her out of the Palmer Stables when they were in town. Ah, the wonderful memories.
