9/16/2018 2003 Sire rating

Moving another 10 years down the line we take another look at the sire rating, this time for 2003.  Remarkably, just like in 1993, there were three stallions still left on the sire rating from a decade earlier.  This time they were Harlem Globetrotter, who occupied the #4 spot both years, Radiant Sultan, who occupied the #6 spot both years, and the beautiful Phi Slama Jama.  The deceased sire list from 2003 contained many of the previous decade's top sires, including Sultan's Santana, Champagne Fizz, Worthy Son, Talent Town and The New York Times all in the top 10.  The top sire from 1993, Chubasco, was ranked 12th in the deceased sires.
Who made it to the top of the chart?  Supreme Heir, son of six time sire rating leader Supreme Sultan, was at the top in 2003 for the 4th straight year.  Other Supreme Sultan sons near the top of the list were Sultan's Great Day, Radiant Sultan, The Irish Connection and Sultan's Royalty.  Supreme Sultan's son, Sultan's Santana, was represented by Santana's Charm and Shamrock Santana.

The geography of the stallions seemed more in line with the Kentucky hub of the Saddlebred world.A whopping 18 stallions from Kentucky were advertised, with the rest coming from Florida, Texas, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, California, Illinois, Missouri and Georgia.  The Carolinas were completely shut out of the large ads this year.

Here, in alphabetical order, are the 30 stallions who had at least full or half page ads in the February 2003 issue with the sire rating results. If they were in the top 25 stallions, their number ranking  is highlighted in red.  Callaway Hills had a nice ad, but didn't picture Caramac or Blue Norther, who were both in the top 10.

9/9/2018 1993 Sire rating results

Moving up another decade into the 1990's has brought more changes to the Saddlebred world's sire rating.  Of course, Supreme Sultan, the mainstay of the late 70's and early 80's is gone, but his sons are clearly in evidence, with six of them in the top 12 sires.  Supreme Sultan also heads the list of deceased sires.  Other big names gone from the leading sires list, but moved to the deceased sires list are Will Shriver, Stonewall's Main Event, Starheart Victory and Grape Tree's Fox.

There were only three stallions on the top 25 list that had occupied the list a decade earlier.  They were Sultan's Santana, Champagne Fizz and Courageous Admiral.  And who's on top?  A colorful stud from California that helped make spots commonplace in the show ring.  It's none other than Chubasco.  He was featured on the cover with the other two stallions from Scripps Miramar Ranch, who just happened to be pretty terrific horses as well.  WGC CH Sky Watch and WGC CH Buck Rogers.

Geographically speaking, they are spread out again, with Missouri stallion ads leading the way.  Kentucky and California are tied with 4 each, then Virginia.  The other states advertising one or two stallions are Minnesota, Indiana, North Carolina, Iowa, Oklahoma, Georgia, New York, Illinois, Texas, and Ohio.

Here are the 30 stallions who had at least full or half page ads in the February 1993 issue with the sire rating results. If they were in the top 25 stallions, their number ranking  is highlighted in red.  The numbers dwindled from a decade earlier.

And here are the stallions who were in the top 25 on the sire rating, but either had a small ad, or no ad at all.  Perhaps some of them didn't stand to the public, so no need to advertise.  Their rating is highlighted in red, and as you can see, three are some really good ones.

This magazine issue also had a stallion directory which consisted of small ads with pedigree and contact info.  Many of the stallions were advertised elsewhere in the magazine.  It wasn't nearly as large as the stallion parade from 1973.

Sometimes, I'm surprised by the pictures chosen by a stallion owner to represent their horse.  Maybe they want a current picture, or a particular format.  There were a few in this magazine issue that were pretty awful, so I substituted a better picture that I had on hand.

The next  post takes us into the new millennium.  Who will be at the top in 2003?
