Peavine’s Highland Chief graced the cover of the Kentucky
Horseman magazine from March of 1935. A
handsome stallion indeed, but who ever heard of him? He certainly doesn’t sound familiar like
American Born, Kalarama Rex, King’s Genius, Chief of Longview and other
contemporaries. It didn’t take much
searching to find that Peavine’s Highland Chief left a legacy, but it was
through his daughters.
Peavine’s Highland Chief was owned by Sterling Owens of
Cynthiana Kentucky and foaled in 1922.
His name is a combination of three important families in his pedigree,
and taking a look at his pedigree tells the story that he was bred to be a good
one. His sire, Red Rex, was a son of Rex
Peavine and his dam was a granddaughter of Rex Peavine. His 2nd dam, Golden Gloss, was by
Highland Denmark, and his 3rd dam, Sue Chief BHF was by Harrison
Chief, so Peavine’s Highland Chief incorporates the bloodlines of the Peavine,
Highlander and Chief families. On a side
note, Golden Gloss was the 3rd dam of Judy O’Lee , making her the 5th
dam of Supreme Sultan! Also, Peavine’s Highland Chief’s dam’s sire was a full
sister to WGC Diana of the Lea.
Mountain Aire by Peavine's Highland Chief
During the middle 1930’s, Peavine’s Highland Chief was
near the top of the Saddle & Bridle Sire rating, and in 1937, he topped the
list. Some of his better showing
offspring were George Gwinn, a gelding,
All American, another gelding, Mountain Aire, Blue Eagle, and Earl of
Oakland, yet more geldings. Geldings are
fine representatives of their sire in the show ring, but as time goes on, they
fade from view, and so does their sire.
Lucky for this stallion, he had some admirable daughters.
Beverly Belle, Peavine’s Highland Maid, Gracious Gesture, Magnolia's Peavine and Lady Solitaire
all have made lasting contributions to the American Saddlebred. Hi Dixie was in the Broodmare Hall of Fame,
and Ethel’s Rose earned points for her sire.

She produced her only foal in 1934 as a 4 year old.
She sold in 1940 for $1600.

f. 1930, Beverly Belle's dam was Silkiline, a granddaughter of WGC Red Mc Donald
Beverly Belle was a 5 gaited show mare sired by Peavine's Highland Chief.
She only produced two foals, but one was Ky Cardinal Belle BHF by King's Genius.
Ky. Cardinal Belle was also bred by Sterling Owen, and later sold to Castleton Farms.
She produced, among others, The New Moon, Belle Sparkle,
Sparkling Pride and Vanity's Belle.

She produced a World's Grand Champion 5 gaited daughter, and granddaughter.

Peavine's HIghland Maid foaled in 1933, sired by the subject of this post,
and out of a granddaughter of Rex Peavine. She produced 9 foals including
Gorgeous Huldy in 1942. Gorgeous Huldy was by Wake Robin, who traced to
Chester Dare on his sire line. Gorgeous Huldy entered the Broodmare Hall of Fame.
Among her colts were Witchcraft, Magic Souvenir and The Enchanted Hour.

Pucker Up, Jaunty Janette and WGC Breaking News.
He also sired Soft Spoken who was in the BHF.

It seems like every few days I find another line tracing to Peavine's Highland Chief.
Waller's Peavine was his best son that I was aware of, but I didn't think
that went anywhere. Boy was I wrong. There aren't a lot of pictures,
but Waller's Peavine's line back to his sire yielded lots of good horses.

Foaled in 1930 out of a mare tracing to Chester Dare, Waller's Peavine was
the sire of Knight of Gallatin who foaled in 1937 out of a mare by Love Chief.
In turn, Knight of Gallatin sired the good producing mare,
Knight's Golden Lady BHF in 1951. Her dam traced to
Bourbon King through Torpedo and Rex Peavine through Shanty Pernell.
While owned by Castleton Farm, Knight's Golden Lady produced
Air Commander, Sharp Lady and CH Commanders Delight, all by Wing Commander.
When bred to Anacacho Shamrock, she produced Clover Princess BHF.
