Garland Bradshaw was certainly in the Who’s Who of
American Saddlebred trainers. For years,
he trained and showed many notables of the Saddlebred world. However, he also owned his own farm in
Danville, Kentucky where he bred and raised numerous horses. And as you can imagine, the pedigrees on his
horses were phenomenal. In November of 1977, after many years in the industry,
Mr. Bradshaw made the tough decision to sell his horses at auction. This catalog lists the 91 horses he sold that
day, which included breeding stallions, broodmares, finished show horses,
prospects, and the weanling crop from 1977.
This post will look at Mr. Bradshaw and some of his more famous horses,
the horses which were put through the sale, how they did, and how they were
bred. It also looks at the one horse he decided to
retain so it could live out its life at the farm in Danville, KY.
Garland Bradshaw’s first training job outside his home
state of Tennessee was in 1929 at Longview Farm in Lee’s Summit, MO. When Longview dispersed in 1934, it was on to
Wildwood Farm in Germantown, TN, then Magnolia Farm in Memphis and Ridgefields
Farm in Danville KY in 1947. This would
be his last move, since he purchased the farm in 1960. The horse most closely associated with Mr.
Bradshaw was Lady Carrigan, although there were many others such as Nellie
Pidgeon, Sunshine Carol, Forest Song, Kate Shriver, Broadland’s Patrician Lady and Oman’s Anacacho
Rhythm. Oman’s Anacacho Rhythm was purchased
by Mr. Bradshaw as a long yearling and was shown in 5 gaited classes. He was used as a breeding stallion and produced
many horses of note, including CH Anacacho Dancer, CH Gold Treat, CH Latin
Rhythm and Rhythm’s Ragtime. When the
Bradshaw dispersal took place, Oman’s Anacacho Rhythmn, at age 24, was withheld
from the sale, and lived out his life on the farm. Although Mr. Bradshaw dispersed is breeding
operations, he continued in the Saddlebred industry up until the time of his
death in March, 1982.
