April 1949 National Horseman

1/27/14  The April 1949 issue of National Horseman had a roadster on the cover and an entire section on the development of roadsters.  It also had a lot of stallion ads.  Here are a few of them.

American Masterpiece
American Born x Edna May's Delight by Edna May's King
He was bred by Wm M.M. Robinson of Nawbeek Farm in Pennsylvania.
At the time of the ad, he was owned by Ward Acres in New York, but was
later owned by George Gwinn.

Golden Carol
Oklahoma Peavine X daughter of Independence Chief
He only sired 15 colts and stood in Virginia..

Kalarama Colonel
Kalarama Rex X Edith Gatley (BHF)
He was bred by Kalarama Farms, but purchased as a yearling by Ike Lanier of Grasslands Farm
and owned by him for the rest of his life.

King of Rose-a-Lee
Royal Kalarama X Joy Light by American Born
When crossed with Lucy Kilmer (BHF), this pair produced 15 colts,
including CH Miss Helen, CH Look at me from Rose-a-Lee, CH Rose of Fremar,
Knollandaire and CH Miss Lib.  He was owned by Rose-A-Lee Farms
in Harrodsburg, Kentucky.

Lord Baltimore
AKA Rex Lee Lewis
Maid's Rex by Rex Peavine x Lina Lee Lewis (granddaughter of Bourbon King)
As Rex Lee Lewis, he sired Conowingo.
He was also a half brother to Fiery Crags, WGC 3gaited horse in 1935.

Marshall Genius
King's Genius X Young Lady McDonald by Marshall McDonald
He sired a few colts from the early 1040's thru the early 1960's.
In1949, he stood in Greensboro, NC

Rex Story
Rex Shannon by Wild Rex X Ruth Roland (BHF) by Astral Peavine
He was owned by Marshall Story and stood in Missouri.

Veiled Prophet
Captain Courageous X Clay T Rose by King's Sport
Bred by Winganeek Farm in Lexington Ky, he passed through many hands including
Mrs.Weil ( owner of Vanity), Kalarama Farm, C. Leake Fain, Chester Caldwell
and finally ended up with Walter Burke.

American Bourbon
American Born X Marjorie Ann by Bourbon King
He stood right here in Michigan at Dama Farm.
The site of this farm in Howell Michigan is now a condo.
He was grandsire of my husband's broodmare Sis.

Grassland's Jackpot
Kalarama Colonel X Grassland's Dream by Moreland Peavine
World Champion 2 yr old Fine Harness horse.
He was bred at Ike Lanier's Grassland Farms but had just been sold to
Oman Stables in Nashville Tennessee.  He was supposed to be shown and
then become the herd sire for Oman Stables.  This didn't happen since Oman bred
and raised Oman's Desdemona Denmark just a few years later.

Love the ads in these magazines.  Wouldn't you love to have trailer like this one?

There was also an obituary for James K Robinson Sr, owner of Crebilly Farms in Westchester Pennsylvania.  He owned such greats as Sensation Rex, my favorite broodmare Wild Wind, and Beau Fortune.  He bred Vanity's Sensation of Crebilly and Lady Jane of Crebilly.  His son James K. Robinson Jr succeeded him as owner of Crebilly Farms, and his brother William M. M. Robinson was the owner of Nawbeek Farm in Paoli Pennsylvania.

1/18/14 Summer Lights

1/18/14  About two weeks ago, I received a letter from a friend of mine.  Usually we correspond via email, so I knew she had sent me something. Inside were two very small proofs of my mare at her first show in 1998.  The other item enclosed was a magazine clipping from 1988 with a picture of her dam, Summer Lights.  Although I never saw her show, I've heard from a number of people that she was quite a sight. Game, athletic and powerful, she would squat down and do a true slow gait. According to her trainer, if only her neck had been a couple inches longer she would have been nearly perfect.

She was purchased as a 4 year old from her breeder, and she was owned for the rest of her life by my friend.  Carolyn had been to the breeder's barn to look at another prospect, but when she saw Summer Lights work, she decided she was the one.

Summer Lights showed in 3 gaited classes as a four year old, but came back the next year as a gaited horse. Although she never earned all her champion points, she did very well and showed around the Ohio circuit until she was nine.  She later produced five foals, and all were shown successfully.  She ruled the rest of the broodmares at her farm until she died of an aneurysm while grazing out in her field at age twenty.  Her daughter Loretta shares her dam's trait..........she rules the pastures at our farm and doesn't let anyone forget who is boss!

He was a half brother to New Yorker.

Bossa Nova Baby, her oldest daughter was by CH Albelarm Supremacy.

Summer Waltz, her youngest daughter, was sired by CH Star Waltz

Lewie Lewie was her last colt and was also by CH Star Waltz.

Roxie Highland and the rest of the R's

1/6/14  There aren't very many "R" horses left, so here they are.  Normally I only post on Saturday's, but I'm sitting here at my computer on a Monday. It is 6 below zero at 3 o'clock in the afternoon.  We had 10 inches of snow yesterday and it's blowing and drifting like crazy.  It's supposed to get down to 15 below tonight and I don't even live in Minnesota!  No way I can make it in to work, there is a level 3 snow emergency in place and many businesses are closed, so I'll do this now and post it on Saturday.

Roxie Highland was a wonderful 3 gaited mare in the 1930's and a multiple time World's 3gaited Grand Champion. Roxie Highland was owned and shown by Mary Fiers of Oklahoma, who was a top horsewoman.  She also owned Oakland Peavine and  renamed him Oklahoma Peavine before she sold him to Northwind Farm in Michigan.  Mary Fiers sold Roxie Highland at the top of her career to Spindletop Farms in Lexington Kentucky.  Pansy Yount, the owner of Spindletop Farms, owned Roxie for the rest of her life.  Roxie only produced two colts, a stud colt who died at a young age, and a filly named Roxie Highland of Spindletop.  When Roxie died, Mrs. Young held a funeral and had her buried in a coffin.  Her statue stands beside the  American Saddlebred Museum in Lexington, which is right down the road from the old Spindletop Farm.

She is being ridden by Mary Gwyn Fiers in this George Ford Morris painting.

Roxie Highland and The New King
He was foaled in 1937, sired by Beau Peavine, and this picture was on the cover
of the July issue of Saddle and Bridle.  He died as a young colt.

Roxie Highland with her daughter Roxie Highland of Spindletop
This filly was sired by Spindletop's stallion, Beau Peavine.
Both of my broodmares trace back to Roxie thru her daughter.
*Notice that other than the set tail and right hind leg position, Roxie looks identical in both pictures.
Photo-shop in 1937!*

Richardson's Pot O' Gold
He was a double great grandson of Bourbon King on both his sire's & dam's side.
Goldens seem to have gone out of favor with ASB's.  In 1950, there were 140 Goldens registered, in 2000, there were only 27.  Maybe as Parade horses make a comeback, so will Goldens?

Rita Le Rose (BHF)
Beau Peavine X CH Belle Lee Rose (BHF) by American born
Here is another product of the Spindletop Farm's breeding program.
As a broodmare, she produced Anita Le Rose by Society Kalarama (dam of Jamestown and CH Chantilly Rose (BHF)) and  several full siblings by Starheart Stonewall.  One is shown below.

Rita's Star
Starheart Stonewall x Rita Le Rose (BHF)
He was a full brother of Starheart Peavine, Starheart's Challenger
and CH Starheart's Black Magic.

1/7/14  Time for my non-horse related rant. Yes, it got down to minus 15 last night.  I had to walk to the barn, which I usually do anyway, but I can't make it down the road in the truck because of the drifts.  The drifts aren't gone because the county hasn't been down my road in 3 days.  My husband finally got one of the tractors out and plowed so all of us on our road can get out.  That was just before his 94 year old aunt called to say her sink ran over and flooded her kitchen, dining room and hallway.  Guess who got to clean that up?  And to top off the day, her big freezer went out and we had to empty it out and move everything to my son's, daughter's and my freezers.  At least all we had to do to keep it cold was set it outside.

Ready for winter to be over!

1/4/14 Royal Reverie

1/4/14 Moving along with more horses whose names begin with the letter R, let's check out the Royals and the Reverie's.  There are 325 registered Saddlebreds with some form of Reverie in their name.  Many were the product of Reverie Knoll Farm in Danville Kentucky which was owned by Mr. & Mrs. Freeman Keyes during the 1940's.  The most famous horse with a Reverie's prefix was Reverie's Desdemona and she had an earlier post.  And there actually was a horse name Royal Reverie, but his name was changed a few times and there isn't a picture of him.

Reverie's Bourbon Gale
He was sired by Bourbon Genius

Reverie's Copper Sheen
She was sired by Mountain Peavine

Reverie's Grey Pearl
She was sired by Lucky Jean by Jean Val Jean

Reverie's Kentucky Belle
She was sired by Anacacho Denmark and was shown in Fine Harness
where she was a Reserve World's Champion at the Kentucky State Fair.

Reverie's Syncopating Sally
She was also sired by Anacacho Denmark and later
became a broodmare.

Reverie's Thunderhead
Sired by Bourbon Genius out of Bugle Anne, so he was a half brother of
CH Edith Fable, The Supreme Ace, CH Ann Gray and BHF Reverie's :Poinciana.

Royal Rambler
Sired by The Rambler out of Emerald Present BHF by Kalarama Rex

Royal Kalarama
Kalarama Rex X Maxine Spencer
He and Noble Kalarama were both sired by Kalarama Rex, both were owned
at one time by Jack Thompson, and both were shown at the Kentucky State Fair in Fine Harness.
Royal Kalarama sired breeding stallion King of Rose-a-Lee, the nice broodmare Chocolate Kiss
and the mare Star Spangled Rhythm who produced BHF Patsy Li.

Royal Refinement
Sired by Royal Kalarama out of a granddaughter of Noble Kalarama,
she was bred by Jack Thompson.

Royal Van
Sired by Conowingo

Royal Rex Sea
Kalarama Rex X Mountain Vine
His son Bobby Sea was a well known breeding stallion and he had two daughters
in the Broodmare Hall of Fame, Lullaby Baby and Royal Surprise.

Here are three more "Royals" that I missed the first time around.

Royal Irish
3 gaited horse being ridden by Miss Mary Fisher  from a picture
in the September 1932 Saddle & Bridle.
He was a 3/4 brother to Oklahoma Peavine, being out of the same
dam, Margaret O'Neill and by a son of Rex Peavine.

Royal Return
Yorktown X CH Bellisima by Valley View Supreme
Here is a son of two World's Champions.
Wasn't he stunning?

CH CH-EQ Callaway's Royal Request
Merchant Prince X Callaway's Special Request by Will Shriver
A good show horse and good equitation horse as noted by his CH CH-EQ status.
