9/29/18 More from the 1953 sire rating

Since I've reviewed the sire ratings from 1973, 1983, 1993, 2003 and 2013, I figured I'd circle back and pick up 1953 and 1963 as well.  That's about as far back as I can go.  While I don't have any magazines going back to 1933 and 1943, I do know that the top stallions of 1933 were American Ace and Edna May's King.  A decade later in 1943 were Kalarama Rex and Stonewall King. Notice how many stallions listed below are the sons of these prior top stallions.

So who is at the top of the 1953 sire rating? An amazing 23 year old stallion and definitely a top sire for many years, Anacacho Denmark.  Sire to WGC's Kate Shriver, Denmark's Daydream, Denmark's Mokanna (Regal Aire) and RWGC's Afire and Broadland's Captain Denmark, he also sired such breeding stock as Oman's Desdemona Denmark, Anacacho Empire, Oman's Anacacho Rhythm, Ridgefield's Denmark, Oman's Anacacho Maytime, Melody O'Lee and Daneshall's Gift of Roses.

It' s interesting to note that in 1953, deceased sires were still listed in the top 25, even though they weren't much good to any breeders at that point.  Years later, they came up with the idea for a deceased sires list, which gave more room to list the living, breathing stallions on the sire list.

Here are the stallions which had large ads in the magazine in alphabetical order.  Their placement on the top 25 list is noted in red

The final (I really mean it this time) installment in this series will be for the year 1963.  Any guesses as to who will be on top?  Here's a hint.  In 1953, he wasn't on the list yet.  The #2 horse hadn't even sired a colt in 1953.

The Rambler was advertised as a show prospect in the February 1953 issue, but I included him because it's a good picture and he's being ridden by 19 year Tom Moore
The Rambler
Genius Bourbon King X Highland Sylvia

9/22/18 2013 sire rating results

Moving forward another decade has brought many changes to the 2013 sire rating for American Saddlebred stallions.  The top point getters from 2003 have for the most part moved onto the deceased sire list.  Supreme Heir, Caramac, Harlem Globetrotter, The King of Highpoint, Callaway's Blue Norther, Santama's Charm, First Night Out, I'm a New Yorker and Catalyst were top 25 stallions and are now on the top 10 deceased sire list.  Interestingly, Will Shriver and his two top sons Caramac and Callaway's Blue Norther are three of the top four broodmare sires.  What an impact Will Shriver and Callaway Hills has had on the American Saddlebred breed.  And the top stallion in 2013 is a son of Caramac.

Only two stallions repeated in the top 25 from a decade ago.  They were Periaptor and Merchant Prince.  Merchant Prince was lost in a fire at Happy Valley shortly after this, and Periaptor has passed away as well.  A decade earlier, Supreme Sultan sons were most influential on the sire rating.  The pendulum has shifted back in favor of Wing Commander, with 19 of the top 25 stallions tracing to him, and 5 stallions tracing to Supreme Sultan.  Only Merchant Prince traced through a different sire line back to Genius Bourbon King, and the Stonewall King and Kalarama Rex lines had no representatives at all.

A new king has been crowned, and this fine horse just topped the chart for the first time in 2013.  When we looked at the last sire rating from 10 years earlier, Undulata's Nutcracker had yet to sire his first foal.  His rise to the top was meteoric, and his dominance is complete.  Who knows, will he top the chart when this blog looks at 2023?  It's very possible!  He will only be 22 years old at that time.

One thing to note, a stallion didn't grace the cover of the magazine's sire rating issue.  Although the exhibitor on the cover is a good one, and is certainly a supporter of the breed, it seems a shame after nearly 80 years of the sire rating that no stallion owner stepped up to advertise on the cover.  Only 20 stallions had large picture ads, and they only represented different six states: Kentucky, Illinois, Arizona, Missouri, Indiana and California.

Here, in alphabetical order, are the 20 stallions who had at least full or half page ads in the February 2013 issue with the sire rating results. If they were in the top 25 stallions, their number ranking  is highlighted in red. Quite a few of the top stallions didn't advertise, which could have been due to age, closed books, or they could have chosen to advertise at a later month.  Callaway Hills once again had a nice ad, but didn't picture any of their stallions. Cornerstone also had a nice ad and stands multiple stallions, but none were pictured.
