In order to earn the CHampion designation from the American Saddlebred Horse Breeders Association, a horse must earn 15 points at qualified shows by their placings in certain classes. There are many stipulations to earning the points and sometimes it takes years to get to that magical number of 15. Then there are those seasoned campaigners that continue their winning careers for years and amass dozens of points. ASHBA has a list of the top 100 point winners, and it's a very interesting group. Not surprisingly, geldings make up 75% of the list, with mares making the other 25%. Three of these top show mares also made it to the Broodmare Hall of Fame. There isn't a stallion to be found on this list.
Only three of the top 100 are World's Grand Champions, and all were geldings. Interestingly, they were each in a different division, with WGC CH The Daily Lottery showing in 5 Gaited, WGC CH Winter Day being 3 Gaited, and WGC CH Roselawn's Secret Rhythm showing in Fine Harness. The first two of these horses showed in both open and amateur classes throughout their careers, but Roselawn's Secret Rhythm showed mostly in open classes, earning three WGC and three RWGC titles in six years.
Another interesting fact is that around 20 percent of the top 100 point earners were the products of two breeding programs. Callaway Hills was the breeder of top show horses Callaway's Born to Win, Callaway's Born for This, Callaway's Cumulus, Callaway's Winning Number, RWGC Callaway's Mr. Republican, Callaway's Capitol Reporter, Callaway's Pretty Penny and Will's Bulletin. Chubasco, the pinto stallion from Scripps Miramar Saddlebreds, sired Caravelle, Fiasco, Like Thunder, Blustery, Nobody's Business, Sprinkles, Astra Music, Blythe, The Fire Fox, Lily Mystique, Snow Fooling and Policy Maker. The Callaway horses had many owners, but most of the Scripps Miramar horses were shown by owner breeder Michelle Macfarlane herself.
Not all of the Top 100 Point Winners are pictured here, but take a moment to look through many of these great campaigners!
