9/1/18 1983's Sire rating results, a decade later

So what has transpired in the decade following the last post on 1973's sire rating?  Who's still around, who dropped out of sight, and who rose to the top?  What happened to the top ranked stallion from 1973?  Stonewall Premier, the leader in 1973 is nowhere to be found.  He's not on the deceased sire list, and there are no stallions representing him.  The top ranked deceased sire in 1983 was the #2 sire from 1973, Oman's Desdemona Denmark.  1973's #6 horse, CH Colonel Boyle is another goner.  Exhititing more staying power, these former top 25 stallions from 1973 have moved to the deceased fires list: Mr. Magic Man, Supreme Spirit, Gallant Guy and Buck and Wing.

There was no longer a stallion parade which featured six stallions per page, and made it remarkably simple to scan them all.  This time around, I included the full and half page ads for stallions, and only came up with 42 sires.  That's a fraction of a decade earlier.  Those stallions with staying power, and still on the top 25 sire list a decade later include Status Symbol, Jay O'Lee, Skyrim's Bourbon Stonewall, Greenway Commander, Flight Time and Broadland's Kilarney.  The #1 sire in 1983 was none other than the great Supreme Sultan, but he too was coming to the end of his reign since he colicked and died at the end of 1983.

Geographically, the stallions are still spread out, but the concentration of saddlebred sires is becoming more centralized in  Kentucky, Indiana, Virginia and Illinois.  California , Missouri and North Carolina are next and there are still some representing Ohio, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Louisiana, Kansas, Colorado, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

So here are the advertised stallions in alphabetical order.  If they were in the top 25 stallions, their number ranking  is highlighted in red

8/22/18 1973's Sire Rating results

Yesterday, I took my mom to her 82nd high school class reunion. Yes, 82nd.  She and two other ladies are still going strong from the 36 students graduating in 1936 from Sugarcreek High School.  My high school graduation was a mere 45 years ago in 1973.  So what was going on in the Saddlebred breeding world in 1936?  I don't know.  I don't have a Saddle & Bridle stallion rating issue from that year.  However, I do have the 1973 issue.

There were 74 stallions in the Stallion Parade and even more were represented in ads throughout the magazine.  Of the 74 stallions, 15 were sired by WGC CH Wing Commander, 8 each by Genius Bourbon King and also his son Valley View Supreme.  Five stallions were sired by Vanity's Sensation, 4 by Starheart Stonewall, and 3 by Kalarama Colonel.  Those statistics are somewhat echoed by the Top 25 stallions of 1973.  Of the top 25, 3 were sired by Wing Commander, 2 by Vanity's Sensation, and 2 by Genius Bourbon King.  The parallel continues when looking at the top deceased sires.  They were Wing Commander, followed by Valley View Supreme, and Vanity's Sensation.  I'm going to list all 74 stallions, and time has made it apparent which ones made their mark, and which ones didn't.

Have I ever mentioned my favorite class in college was statistics?  Here's one last stat to ponder.  Of the 74 stallions, 16 were from Kentucky.  No surprise there.  Missouri was next with 11, Ohio and Illinois were tied at 7 each.  Wisconsin had 6, California had 5, Indiana 4 and Virginia 3.  What surprised me was the next group.  There were one or two from Texas, New Jersey, West Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Oregon, Iowa, Kansas, Colorado and Pennsylvania.  It doesn't seem like the Saddlebred industry has this wide representation today.

On a side note, there was a small article that Vanity's Scandal, son of Vanity's Sensation, was exported to South Africa.  Today, most Vanity's Sensation stallion descendants come from this sire line, and not the five sires by Vanity's Sensation shown below.  Thank goodness for that South African connection.

Anyway, here are the 74 in alphabetical order and their top 25 order is noted in red

Many good stallions that were advertised weren't on the top 25 list yet, too early in their career.  Many of the top stallions were old and no longer being advertised.  Here is the balance of the top 25 ranked stallions for 1973 whose pictures don't appear.

8.  Shoreacres's Anacacho Genius

14.  Royal Rambler
16.  Buck and Wing
18.  Cain Raiser
19 Genius Mountain Bourbon (he's still represented today)
21. Callaway's Johnny Gillen  (a major force today)
23.  Stonewall's Jackpot
24.  Mountjoy's Aristocrat

I sense a pattern.  Should I do subsequent posts on 1983, 1993 &  2003 stallion ratings
to see the Who's Who going forward?
