8/22/20 Hall of Fame Broodmares - Let's look at Kate Haines BHF (again)

Technically, Kate Haines BHF has already been covered by the blog way back in 2013, but a mare this important can easily use a second look.  Kate Haines BHF was out of the great producer Kathryn Haines BHF, and sired by Sun Flower.  Kathryn Haines was covered recently in the blog.  Sun Flower was WGC in Fine Harness in 1914 and his most memorable offspring were daughters.  Suttie Leigh was also a WGC in Fine Harness, Spoonbill BHF produced Society Rex, and then there was Kate Haines.  Altogether, Kate Haines was bred to five different studs and produced 12 offspring; 3 mares, 3 geldings and 6 stallions.  When Kate teamed up with CH King's Genius, they produced five noteworthy stallions.

Here are the five sons from this cross.

1933 Bourbon Genius, WGC, RWGC.  He was bred by Robert Jones who sold him as a 3 year old to Dixiana Farms where he was campaigned as a show horse, and used at stud.  In 1945 he sold to Reverie Knoll Farms where he died at the young age of 13.

1936 The Genius was also bred by Robert Jones and then sold to Dixiana Farm like his older brother.   Unlike his older brother, he traded hands several more times and lived to be over 20 years old.  Also unlike his older brother, his best offspring were all females.

1938  Genius of Stonyridge was bred by Robert Jones and sold as a yearling to Joe McAdams of Stonyridge Farm in Ohio, where he remained for most of his life.  He was shown as a five gaited horse as well as being used at stud

1939  Leatherwood King, WC.  Again, he was bred by Robert Jones and sold to Leatherwood Farm where he remained. In 1945 he was the World's Champion Five Gaited Stallion, and he placed 3rd in the Championship Five Gaited Stake.

1940  Leatherwood Genius was also owned by Leatherwood Farm and used as a breeding stallion.

Here they are in picture form with some of their notable descendants.

Bourbon Genius was WGC in Fine Harness in 1937, RWGC in FH in 1938,
but also showed in the 5 Gaited Stallion stake in 1938.

This ad for Bourbon Genius appeared in March 1946, the same year he died.

Perhaps the least prolific of the five brothers, and standing at the same farm
with his older brother, he nonetheless produced many colts.
