The American Saddlebred: 2/29/20 Happy Birthday Candles

I recently celebrated one of those monumental birthdays, so why not have some Saddlebred pictures with a birthday theme? Here are two wonderful broodmares, and their contributions to the Saddlebred world. Happy Twenty-First (I past that monumental birthday decades ago!) and Herschella's Happy Birthday BHF. Just take a look at the gorgeous offspring from these two fine ladies.

Happy Twenty-First foaled in 1977 and was sired by New Yorker out of Grape Tree's Sparkling Spirit by Supreme Spirit. She was shown successfully in fine harness by her owner Myrtlean Canaday and produced an even dozen colts. Several were shown, but her best known offspring was her son, the wonderful breeding stallion owned by Blythewood Stables, CF First Night Out by Night Prowler. He was a Reserve World's Champion in Fine Harness and extremely successful in the stud.

Next mare up is Herschella's Happy Birthday and she foaled in 1948. She was sired by American Victory by Nawbeek's Highland King by Edna May's King by Bourbon King, out of a mare that traced to Rex Peavine. Herschella's Happy Birthday had three crosses to Rex Peavine and three crosses to Chester Dare which is a very interesting combination. Although she only produced five colts, they were really good ones, good enough to put Herschella's Happy Birthday in the Broodmare Hall of Fame.

Her daughter CH Precious Secret was by Secret Society. Two of her other colts were full siblings, both being sired by Wing Commander. The were the good show and breeding stallion Super Command, and Starlike BHF.
