9/9/2018 1993 Sire rating results

Moving up another decade into the 1990's has brought more changes to the Saddlebred world's sire rating.  Of course, Supreme Sultan, the mainstay of the late 70's and early 80's is gone, but his sons are clearly in evidence, with six of them in the top 12 sires.  Supreme Sultan also heads the list of deceased sires.  Other big names gone from the leading sires list, but moved to the deceased sires list are Will Shriver, Stonewall's Main Event, Starheart Victory and Grape Tree's Fox.

There were only three stallions on the top 25 list that had occupied the list a decade earlier.  They were Sultan's Santana, Champagne Fizz and Courageous Admiral.  And who's on top?  A colorful stud from California that helped make spots commonplace in the show ring.  It's none other than Chubasco.  He was featured on the cover with the other two stallions from Scripps Miramar Ranch, who just happened to be pretty terrific horses as well.  WGC CH Sky Watch and WGC CH Buck Rogers.

Geographically speaking, they are spread out again, with Missouri stallion ads leading the way.  Kentucky and California are tied with 4 each, then Virginia.  The other states advertising one or two stallions are Minnesota, Indiana, North Carolina, Iowa, Oklahoma, Georgia, New York, Illinois, Texas, and Ohio.

Here are the 30 stallions who had at least full or half page ads in the February 1993 issue with the sire rating results. If they were in the top 25 stallions, their number ranking  is highlighted in red.  The numbers dwindled from a decade earlier.

This magazine issue also had a stallion directory which consisted of small ads with pedigree and contact info.  Many of the stallions were advertised elsewhere in the magazine.  It wasn't nearly as large as the stallion parade from 1973.

Sometimes, I'm surprised by the pictures chosen by a stallion owner to represent their horse.  Maybe they want a current picture, or a particular format.  There were a few in this magazine issue that were pretty awful, so I substituted a better picture that I had on hand.

The next  post takes us into the new millennium.  Who will be at the top in 2003?
