There were 74 stallions in the Stallion Parade and even more were represented in ads throughout the magazine. Of the 74 stallions, 15 were sired by WGC CH Wing Commander, 8 each by Genius Bourbon King and also his son Valley View Supreme. Five stallions were sired by Vanity's Sensation, 4 by Starheart Stonewall, and 3 by Kalarama Colonel. Those statistics are somewhat echoed by the Top 25 stallions of 1973. Of the top 25, 3 were sired by Wing Commander, 2 by Vanity's Sensation, and 2 by Genius Bourbon King. The parallel continues when looking at the top deceased sires. They were Wing Commander, followed by Valley View Supreme, and Vanity's Sensation. I'm going to list all 74 stallions, and time has made it apparent which ones made their mark, and which ones didn't.
Have I ever mentioned my favorite class in college was statistics? Here's one last stat to ponder. Of the 74 stallions, 16 were from Kentucky. No surprise there. Missouri was next with 11, Ohio and Illinois were tied at 7 each. Wisconsin had 6, California had 5, Indiana 4 and Virginia 3. What surprised me was the next group. There were one or two from Texas, New Jersey, West Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Oregon, Iowa, Kansas, Colorado and Pennsylvania. It doesn't seem like the Saddlebred industry has this wide representation today.
On a side note, there was a small article that Vanity's Scandal, son of Vanity's Sensation, was exported to South Africa. Today, most Vanity's Sensation stallion descendants come from this sire line, and not the five sires by Vanity's Sensation shown below. Thank goodness for that South African connection.
Anyway, here are the 74 in alphabetical order and their top 25 order is noted in red.

Many good stallions that were advertised weren't on the top 25 list yet, too early in their career. Many of the top stallions were old and no longer being advertised. Here is the balance of the top 25 ranked stallions for 1973 whose pictures don't appear.
7. Oman's Anacacho Rhythm
8. Shoreacres's Anacacho Genius
11. Harshmont the Great
12. Wingmaster
13. Skyrim's Bourbon Stonewall (he advertised, but not in the stallion parade)
14. Royal Rambler
16. Buck and Wing
18. Cain Raiser
19 Genius Mountain Bourbon (he's still represented today)
21. Callaway's Johnny Gillen (a major force today)
23. Stonewall's Jackpot
24. Mountjoy's Aristocrat
I sense a pattern. Should I do subsequent posts on 1983, 1993 & 2003 stallion ratings
to see the Who's Who going forward?
Be sure to visit the blog's Facebook page and like us. Thanks to all who already have!
Would love to see additional sire rating results. Do you have them from 1989? I believe one of my dad's stallions was listed that year.
ReplyDeleteI have most Saddle & Bridle stallion issues from 1947 forward. What was the stallion's name and I will check it out.
DeleteYes, please continue. I realize most of the picture have been retouched, but they are all extremely beautiful. (I'm a '73 grad too!)
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely going to keep going on this. It's remarkable how quickly some stallions come and go. And overall, very few stallions still have a representative stallion line going even two generations later. A lot of factors determine that, and many quality studs never get much of a chance. BTW, there are a lot of saddlebred fans from the class of '73.
DeleteLove this post!
ReplyDeleteLove this post, this is my father riding, Stsrhesrt Gem.john dawson, at Countryside Horse Farm in ohio. Did you know him, trainer/manager, Mary Miller Johnson, owner
ReplyDeleteI never knew your father, but always heard good things about him. My friend Dr. Elrod horse traded back and forth with Mary Miller Johnson from the 1930's to the 1970's. I almost bought one of MMJ's horses that Doc had at his barn. That was in 1975.
