3/16/2019 Happy 25th Birthday Loretta!

Today is a special post celebrating my mare Loretta's 25th birthday.  Loretta was purchased from her breeder when she was 13 years old, and for the last 12 years has been the Queen of our barn.  It is a justly deserved title and one she relishes.  Loretta came from a family of show horses since her sire is CH Albelarm Supremacy, he by Supreme Sultan and out of CH Enticing Lady.  Her dam, Summer Lights, was also a show mare and was sired by Sandalwood Supreme.  In her day, Loretta was a decent show mare, winning a few blue ribbons, and even placing in a very large class at Lexington.

She came to me as a broodmare, but she has also been used as a trail horse, pony ride extraordinaire and beauty queen.  She has never met a piece of food she didn't love, and although her body has undergone  some changes due to time, gravity and Cushing's, she still has the loveliest face ever.  Loretta pushes her pasture mate around, even though she's at least a hand shorter, and many years older.  Her stall manners are perfect, until she hears the hay bale rustling, then a well placed kick on her stall door reminds me that she must be fed first.

Recently, I read a post about an older horse that passed away, and the owner exclaimed that she had never had to body clip this horse in all her life.  Loretta has always grown a luxurious winter coat, but the past few winters she has outdone herself and actually peels rather than sheds.  Finally when we can't stand it any longer, out come the clippers.  She looks a lot like a wooly mammoth, and due to her pride, no pictures of her are allowed until clipped!

Here are some pictures of Loretta through the years.  Please join me in wishing her a very happy birthday!

3/3/19 The Who's Who Stallion List from 1959

3/2/19   Ooowee, is this going to be a fun post.  I skim through and reread many of my old Saddlebred books every few months and never fail to find something new and interesting.  The collection of Who’s Who in Horsedom by J H Ransom has lots of pictures of horses and horsemen from different types of horse disciplines, from harness racing to Saddlebreds to Thoroughbreds to Shetland ponies.  Way in the back in the directory and index section are several listings including breeding farms, exhibitor and stallion sections for the various breeds.  I’m not sure how the list was compiled, because certainly not all of these stallions advertised in Who’s Who.  While most of these stallions did not advertise there, the list of studs is fairly comprehensive.  However, many successful sires were omitted from the Who's Who list.  The Saddle Horse Stallion section was short and sweet, only a couple of pages long, and just had the stallion name and owner’s name with address.  It's interesting to see who owned these sires, and where the owners lived.  In some cases, the stallions stood at a separate facility, sometimes many states away from the owner. This list is from 1959, and it’s a simple task to pull the 1960 Saddle & Bridle Sire rating to see how the stallions ranked up in the top 25 stallions for the year 1959.  So here they are, in alphabetical order, with pictures where available, and where they ended up for the year of 1959 on Saddle & Bridle's Sire list for the following year. Their placing on the Saddle & Bridle sire list is noted by the # to the left of their name.   This all took place a mere 60 years ago.

You might wonder why Wing Commander didn't make the Saddle & Bridle list in 1959, after all, he was 16 years old.  However, he only had one 5 year old, one 4 year old, and the rest were 3 and under.  Give him a couple years and he was at the top of the list.

*Yekcohs, Sunnyslope Farm, Scott City, KS

Missing from  the list were these stallions who did quite well on the Saddle and Bridle Sire Rating from 1960.
#1.  King Coe,  Mr & Mrs David Neil, Blythewood Farm, Cleveland TN
#15  Sparkling Waters,  Dodge Stables, Lexington KY (however, he was deceased by 1959, so not sure how he made the list)
#16  Stonewall Dysart    (no picture)

#17  Heart of Glory, Minton hickory Farm, Barbourville, KY
#19 Indiana Ace, Happy Valley Farm, Rossville, GA
#20  Arletha’s George    (no picture)
#23 Alexander the Great

Some other well known studs missing from the Who's Who list as well as from the top 25 sire rating list were
*Mr. Butterfly
*Genius Bugger Boo
*Dawn’s Squadron Leader

*Night of Folly

Hope you enjoyed a look at such a lengthy list of standing stallions for 1959.
