11/30/14 A Broodmare Triple Treat

11/30/14 A Broodmare Triple Treat

After four weeks of Michigan Saddlebreds followed by four weeks of the 1968 Kentucky State Fair Horse Show results, what should come next?  I was kicking around a few ideas in my head, but then I spotted a cute picture of three Saddlebred broodmares on Facebook.  They were standing in front of a barn, just staring perfectly at the camera as if someone had lined them up at a show.  My soft spot for broodmares made me decide very quickly to feature three mares from the Broodmare Hall of Fame.  There are many to choose from, and some have already been done, so these are the three I pulled out of a hat. They are very unique mares, from different eras, and are very different from one another.
Just waiting for spring!

Annie C. was one of the first mares inducted into the BHF and was written up in the 1986 May/June issue of the American Saddlebred magazine.    When bred to Bourbon Chief, she produced the full brothers Bourbon King, Marvel King, Brilliant King & Montgomery Chief.  I can’t imagine a horse today that doesn't trace to this mare.

Annie C.  (BHF)
f. 1891  Wilson's King by Harrison Chief X Kate by Richelieu King

Bourbon King

Montgomery Chief

Brilliant King

Marvel King

Miss Chatterbox  produced 4 colts, all gelded, and 3 fillies.  Of the three fillies, only one reproduced and those offspring did not have any colts.  Therefore, Miss Chatterbox has no living descendants left after only two generations.  So why did she make the BHF?  Two of her gelded sons were WGC’s in Fine Harness.  They were the great CH Lemon Drop Kid and his full brother CH Bit O’Chatter that was shown as High Button Shoes.  Miss Chatterbox did have a full sister who also ended up as a broodmare.  You can read more about Milady Betty here:

Melody O’Lee (BHF)

If she only had been the dam of Supreme Sultan, her place in Saddlebred history would be secure, but she also produced CH Lilli O’Lee, Supreme Dugger, and Super Supreme.   She died in 1974 at the age of 21.
Melody O'Lee (BHF)

Super Supreme was a full brother to Supreme Sultan

And of course I had to include my favorite broodmare

11/22/14 1968 Kentucky State Fair - Stake night

11/22/14  Here is the 4th and final installment about the results found in the 1968 Kentucky State Fair Horse Show Official Program.  The cost was $1.00 and it wasn't nearly as large as the programs we have today.  The last three weeks of this blog have featured young horses, junior exhibitors and amateur exhibitors, but the best was saved for last.  The show also included Hackney ponies, pleasure horses (on a very limited scale), county fair classes, equitation, roadsters, Tennessee Walkers and pony classes in its 103 classes.

Let's look at who showed in these classes.  Of course, My-My was the reigning 5-Gaited horse.  This powerful mare had won for the last five years and was attempting to match the record of the great Wing Commander with 6 consecutive wins.  Could she do it?  In the 3 gaited division, Bellissima was the returning champion.  Would she and trainer Tom Moore win another championship?  Duke of Daylight was a two time champion in Fine Harness, and was often shown by his amateur owner.  He won the Ladies Fine Harness Stake with Mrs. Palmer in 1968, but would he come back in the championship stake to show with trainer Tom Moore?  Note how many of these horses are now  CHampions, although the designation didn't exist in 1968.

Somewhere we need a criss-cross directory of show names and registered names.  So glad that isn't allowed anymore.  That wraps up the 1968 Kentucky State Fair.  Less than two months later, CH My-My developed a liver problem and died in October 1968 at age 11.  We'll never know if she could have gone on to break the record and win seven consecutive 5-Gaited Grand Championships.

11/15/14 1968 Kentucky State Fair results, Amateur division

11/15/14 1968 KSF Amateur division results

Here are more results from the 1968 Kentucky State Fair Horse Show program, and there are again some surprising discoveries.  In the entire show, the Amateur and Ladies classes only make up seven of the 103 classes at the show.  Is the modern KSF offering more classes with more splits because there are so many more amateurs showing?  Does that mean there are less stake horses now?  Were the classes better filled back then? In any event, there are some well known horses and exhibitors showing that year. Some names will be recognized from the Junior Exhibitor ranks.  If they were 15 years old, they could show in the Ladies and Amateur classes too.
