CH King's Genius

Hands down,  King's Genius is my favorite saddlebred stallion.  He beats out Wing Commander, Kalarama Rex, Bourbon King, Stonewall King, Edna May's King and Rex Peavine and a whole lot of other stallions.    His balance as a show horse and breeding stallion should rank him up there on anyone's list, but he remains my personal favorite.  Everyone is entitled to their favorite, right?

He's influential to the breed, earned his Champion status, and he was drop dead gorgeous.  King's Genius was grandsire of CH Wing Commander and was a three time great-grandsire to Supreme Sultan.  Another reason he's important in my book is that he has appeared in the pedigree of every saddlebred I've ever had.  That's not saying much in today's saddlebred since he surely appears in every modern saddlebred's pedigree.  However, he was the great-grandsire of my first three saddlebreds.  Starheart Secret, mentioned in an earlier post, traced back to him on her dam's side.  Buddy, best ever saddlebred, and his half sister that I owned had King's Genius appear twice on their registration papers.  While he doesn't appear on the registration papers of my current horses, he is in their pedigree at least six or seven times. 

Check out the post on Kate Haines (BHF).  He was the other half of her famous produce.  He was bred to some wonderful mares, and he sired NINE Hall of Fame Broodmares including Flirtation Walk, Helen Highwater, May Genius, Rose Genius, Ky. Cardinal Belle, King's Genius Choice, Queen's Genius of Belemar, Candy Genius and another blog subject, Reverie's Desdemona. 
Breeding sons besides those he sired with Kate Haines included Wild Genius, Ridgefield's Genius, King's Farewell, Genius' Firefly, Blazing Genius and Pirate Gold.

I found this thumbnail photo in the 1940 National Horseman and he was on a page with a dozen other stallions.  He caught my eye and when I looked at the legend at the bottom of the page to see who this stallion was, I wasn't surprised to read his name.  Unretouched, not posing a bit, but still beautiful.

O.........klahoma

9/22/13  Another letter of the alphabet without a whole lot of horses in my file is the letter "O".  Most of the horses from my neighboring Ottawa Creek Farm had horses with the Ottawa prefix,  but I'm doing a post on the farm later.  All of the O'Lee's and the O' Goshen's used it as their surnames, so they can't go here.  Oak Hill's Dear One was mentioned in Double Duty mares post and Oak Hill's Dear Sire was in the post on Yorktown sons.  Our Brilliant Belle has already been pictured.  Sorry not much, but here we go. 

 

Oklahoma Peavine

Rex Peavine X Margaret O'Neal  by Kentucky Highland

He was a show and breeding stallion that stood in Michigan for many

years.  Most stallion ads that I have run across for him use this photo.

He was originally named Oakland Peavine, but one of his owners lived

in Oklahoma, so his name was changed.  Evidently he was too well

established by the time he came to Michigan to change to Michigan Peavine.

Oklahoma Peavine was owned by Northwind Farm in Lansing, Michigan, 

This was his grave marker placed at the farm.  Many years later,

the farm was developed into a residential subdivision and a shopping center.

They moved his grave marker to an island in the parking lot of the shopping center. 

 I found it and photographed it on a trip to Michigan State University. 

He was a good sire and two of his daughters made it to the Broodmare Hall of Fame.

He also produced good show horses including World's Grand Champion

Oman's Desdemona Denmark

He has already appeared in the post about his fabulous dam and the

other fabulous mare in his life, Dixie Duchess.  He was the

#1 breeding sire in America for many years and sired many excellent horses.

He also had the good luck to be bred to some of the very best

mares including 15 BHF mares.

"N"iscellaneous

9/14/13  I didn't have much inspiration this week, so it's back to the alphabet.  We're all the way up to the horses beginning with the letter "N", but my selection is woefully lacking.  So I'm throwing in a miscellaneous photo as well. 

I used this photo before, but I finally found the label listing the horses.

Will Shriver's stallion sons

9/8/13 What have the last two five gaited World's Grand Champions had in common?  Besides brilliance, motion, athleticism and power?  Will Shriver was their grandsire!  Bravo Blue was sired by Callaway's Blue Norther, and Callaway's Annabel Allison was sired by Caramac.  Other posts have talked about Wing Commander and some of his sons, Yorktown's sons and Supreme Sultan sons, so why not talk about Will Shriver?  Will was a product of Callaway Hills' breeding program, and most of his stallion sons had their breeding careers at that same farm.  A couple other posts  from February & March have already talked a little about Callaway Hills, but this is dedicated to Will's sons.

 His offspring included WGC 5G CH Callaway's Forecaster, CH Callaway's Cumulus,

CH Callaway's Carnival in Rio.  Stallion sons include The Mystery Writer, Deep Blue,

Since Caramac and Callaway's Blue Norther were so successful, many of Will's other sons didn't get as much chance at stud, but they were useful nonetheless.

Chancellor was a Will Shriver son that wasn't owned by

in Michigan.  He was very long lived, like many in the family,

and recently passed away at age 28.

She was bred by Spindletop Farm and produced the stallions Stonewall's Beau Peavine and

CH Stonewall's Crescendo.  One of her daughters, Lifetime Affair, was also in the BHF,

but sadly drowned in a flash flood when she was 24.

 

Meadow Majesty

Kalarama Rx X Spelling Bee (BHF) by King Vine

 He sired Meadow Vanity (BHF), which was enough to make him famous.

Melody O'Lee (BHF)

Anacacho Denmark X Judy O'Lee by Leatherwood King

She produced Supreme Sultan.  See a post on some of his sons,

Mercer Rex

 Rex Peavine X Edith Gatley (BHF) by Kentucky Choice

He produced breeding stallion Gallant Knight, who was out of Highland Perle. 

 Mercer Rex's full sister was Spirit of Kentucky (BHF).

Moreland Maid (BHF)

American Born X Youth's Charm by Ben Sory

Her 3 gaited daughter, Maid of Orleans, produced

Grand View's Matinee Idol, who sired my Buddy.

Mountain Peavine

His daughter Little Bo Peep was a 3-gaited show horse and also in the Broodmare Hall of Fame.
